Christopher D. Ansell is an independent curator, exhibitions producer at the National Memorial Arboretum and visiting tutor at Birmingham School of Art. 


He is interested in how narrative is produced and read within exhibitions, literature and theatre, with particularly focus on the position of figurative depictions within these narratives. 


In his work at the National Memorial Arboretum, this interest manifests itself in exhibitions that explore how conflict, memorialisation and remembrance inform our experience of being human and the human condition.

Clare Twomey

A hundred years since the Armistice, the country remembered those who served and sacrificed in World War I. At 11am on 11 November 2018, people gathered around memorials and monuments to quietly reflect on the moment when the guns fell silent.

Twomey’s installation of porcelain medals is a lasting record of this moment. A hundred medals rest upon wooden benches, a fragile memento of a moment when people gathered to remember.

Like medals awarded for courageous deeds or plaques inscribed with the names of the fallen, Twomey’s medals honour an act or quality. Glazed upon the porcelain medals are the hopes of those who gathered at the Arboretum, the qualities that we can strive to commemorate in a hundred years’ time.

Clare Twomey is a British artist who lives and works in London. Often producing work in response to a site, she has exhibited at Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate, Crafts Council, Museum of Modern Art Kyoto Japan, the Eden Project and the Royal Academy of Arts.
